Le rapport de la double terre

River traffic doubles, grain bids hold — and the timber haulers roll right through it all

Two flatbarges out of Savanna cleared Saturday. Bids barely moved. Out in the Lake State pine, the chip vans haven't stopped since August.

Barge tops were $1.95 over the board at Savanna, and the inland basis finally cracked a dime wider for the first time since June. Elevators that spent July buying nothing are calling drivers again.

The timber story is bigger than the grain story this week: two mills went to double shift on pine pulpwood, and landed cost per ton is the number every logger between Alexandria and Jasper is quoting at the coffee counter.

What ties them is labor and iron — half the new combines delivered this fall leave the lot with a chipper hitch, and the local logging crew is hiring. Both halves of this market run on the same hands.

  • Ag techWeed-mapper drones pass field calibration at three co-ops

Spray-on-sight rigs hit 94% spot-kill in side-by-side plots. Burn-down passes are down a third. The setup that beat the boom sprayer in replicated trials last season held up across three co-ops this fall: a push-nozzle rig, a camera gantry, and a shared mapping drone that sends the prescription to both. Growers on the walk-through kept saying the same thing — the tech is finally boring, which means it works.

1,400 dig-cycle count at the county fair display lot. Noiseless digging was the real crowd-pleaser. Two utility contractors ran the machine side-by-side with a diesel backhoe on the same trench course. Same cycle count by 4 p.m., same hole. The operator's complaint: quiet machines get ridden harder because nobody feels the shift change.

The pilots are careful and honest about the limits: no live standing timber in wind over 15, no frozen ground yet. Land owners want it for the steep ground nobody wants to walk. Haul contractors want it because a machine that runs 9 hours is a machine that feeds the chip plant steady.
